It’s interesting to hear William’s process after watching Felix in Exile. I think there’s something special about his process of not knowing what the meaning is until the piece is done. I find this happens a lot in everything I do, especially design. At the beginning, I set out to do something and as my idea and design develops, the story and purpose changes which is not necessarily a bad thing. I think William’s ability to embrace this phenomenon is what makes him unique because he starts the artwork with no concept of what the end result will be.
I think his animations are somewhat symbolic of his life and how ended up where he is today. He dabbled around in acting, drawing, and painting and animation for him didn’t emerge until a friend decided to film his process of drawing. This was the beginning of his stop motion films through an iterative and adaptive process of drawing. He realized later that charcoal would be the best medium for this endeavor due to its ability to change as fast as one could think. I find this to be a cool process to work because in doing this, he’s able to play with the viewer’s perception of time and understanding of how the world works. Uncertainty is William’s driving force.
